Asan Bay Overlook

The Asan Bay Overlook is one of many monuments that was erected by the National Park Service to honor the memory of those who liberated Guam in 1944. The monument has a wall recording those who died during the battle for Guam and a plaque dedicated to the Chamorro sailors who died during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The memorial overlooks the Asan Bay and also gives a brief overview of the Japanese capture of the island in 1941 and subsequent defense in 1944. This memorial is a wonderful place to visit and I would highly encourage anyone who visits the island to stop by. Enjoy all of the photos on the full page here.

Guam Animals in Need

This post and the related page are something that I’ve been working on for a while now but it’s finally ready for primetime. Guam Animals in Need (GAIN) is Guam’s only animal shelter and the only place for stray and feral animals to be cared for. I always like playing with the animals there (they enjoy it as well) and enjoyed my time at the animal shelter. You could always adopt a friend in you get sent to Guam and any volunteer help that you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Here’s the link to the full page on GAIN and I hope that you enjoy all of the photos!

A Short Drive Through Turner Road

Hello everybody, once again I’m posting up some videos of a few short drives through Guam and its wonderful landscape. Turner Road breaks off from Route 6 near the top of Nimitz Hill and allows you to see both sides of the island very easily. The dirt road at the end offers access to numerous mud-bog trails, biking and hiking trails, and stunning vista points from the center of the isle of Guam. I have to leave the island soon and can no longer afford to get my truck dirty but I may take some more pictures of the area from a few bike rides. Enjoy!

Sometimes I just wish that my truck had some Super Swampers on it…

Marbo Cave Cleanup Update #4

I decided to drive through the Marbo Cave area one last time and something magical happened that I was not expecting: The Matson Corporation had brought an entire cargo container to clear up trash from the area. It seems that some people do care about that area. Here’s a short video of what I saw and a time lapse of me clearing out a storm drain.

Marbo Cave Update V3.0

I’ve put quite a lot of time into trying to clean up the area around and the road leading up to the Marbo Cave. The illegal dumping never seems to stop in this area and unless someone actually receives punishment for some of the following actions there isn’t really much that I can do on my own:

  • Start tire fires
  • Dump large appliances
  • Torching a vehicle to dispose of it
  • Dump large amounts of household trash
  • Dump trash or appliances in the middle of the road

I suppose that I might clear a little more brush out of the area but my time on Guam grows short. I really have no desire to serve as someone’s personal garbage service and would rather do some more work at the only animal shelter on the island: Guam Animals in Need (GAIN). I’ll close this post off with some of the last photos I took of my cleanup in the area. Perhaps one day a group of people will care enough to keep what should be a beautiful area relatively clean? I see a cop car drive through the area once in a while, perhaps they’ll catch a few of the people who are too lazy to find a dumpster?

Fadi’an Point and One Thousand Steps Trail

The One Thousand Steps Trail is a short hike with a relatively quick elevation change that can easily be done in less than 30 minutes. Multiple areas along the trail have been filled in with concrete steps in the steepest sections but don’t trust the associated handrails to support your weight. This is a hike that everyone who drops by the island should do. You don’t need to bring several liters of water, don’t have to deal with much mud, don’t need any special gear, and can fish at Fadi’an Point if the tides are right. I hope that you enjoy all of the photos and you’ll find the rest of them here!

Sella Bay Overlook and Trail

The hike to Sella Bay from the Overlook point is of moderate difficulty and can be done in less than three hours if you don’t stop for too long to take photos. It was raining when I started this hike and the soil and clay were extremely slick. Everything you wear will be soaked by the time you are done with this hike whether it rains or not (sweat, river water, seawater, rain, take your pick). It doesn’t take too long, the views are stunning, it’s not too trashed since there is some difficulty in getting there, and it’s not as dangerous as the Cetti Falls trail is.

I took photos on my way back to the trail head so all of them will start in the bay. I didn’t very many good photos from the top of the overlook on this day. Once the skies finally started to clear I just wanted to drain my boots of water and change out my socks (oh yeah, bring some extra socks). If you ever happen to stop by the island this is a trail that I would highly recommend. I hope that you enjoy the photos and you’ll find the rest of here them on the full page!  Starting location.

Route 6 (Nimitz Hill)

This posts just has a few videos of me driving up and down Nimitz Hill to get some breathtaking views of the center of the isle of Guam. In the first video I head from north to south and in the second video I have a good spot to pull off the road and really show off what you can observe. Enjoy!

Southern Island Drive

Good evening everybody, all I have for today are some videos showcasing the southern half of the isle of Guam as the Sun was setting. It really is a wonderful drive and I might have to try it on my bicycle at some point before I leave. Editing and uploading all of these videos in 1080p resolution reminded me why I switched to dealing with 720p videos though; the files just get so large. Anyway, I hope that you enjoy this virtual tour!
